The flagship of the Definition range, the DC10T rates as Tannoy’s most accurate, revealing and dynamic loudspeaker to date. A powerful combination of Tannoy’s latest 10 inch Dual Concentric driver with WideBand tweeter, precision matched 10 inch bass driver and an ultra rigid plywood cabinet results in a design of outstanding musical articulation and class leading dynamics. For the audiophile that accepts no compromises in the pursuit of sound quality, the DC10T features a Deep Cryogenically Treated straight path crossover, silver plated copper conductors and Tannoy’s unique fifth speaker terminal for driver grounding. Hand crafted and hand finished to exceptional standards throughout, the Definition DC10T distils, refines and perfects Tannoy’s rich heritage in loudspeaker design and audiophile technology.

Highly braced curved cabinet with DMT

The new curved cabinets are constructed from the finest grade plywood specifically chosen for its natural acoustic properties; manufactured from birch grown slowly in cold regions of the world and selected for its denser quality. The complex curve reduces resonances and internal reflections, improving mid-band clarity and greatly enhancing micro detailing. A special bracing mechanism, incorporating Tannoy’s Differential Material Technology™ (DMT), rigidly couples the driver/enclosure interface, further improving Definition’s accuracy in instrumental timbre.

Each Definition cabinet is hand finished to an exceptionally high standard in a choice of high gloss lacquered real wood veneers or high gloss black. Subtle aluminium trim to conceal fixings, magnetic grill mounts embedded below the surface and discrete Tannoy branding ensures Definition is clean and contemporary looking throughout.

Crossover with Deep Cryogenic Treatment

High end components and a ‘simple, straight’ philosophy combine to create a crossover with an ultra clean signal path. Low loss laminated core inductors ensure optimum LF performance while the HF network’s audiophile grade polypropylene capacitors are acoustically damped using the Tannoy DMT™ material. The Definition crossover sets the benchmark for signal integrity, reproducing music with all the articulation and intelligibility of the original performance.

The entire crossover assembly is subject to revolutionary Deep Cryogenic Treatment (DCT), achieving unparalleled gains in resolution and creating a more natural, cohesive sound. Using a proprietary process, the Definition crossover is supercooled to –190 degrees Centigrade and thawed over a set time period. This permanently reduces internal stresses in the microstructure of the crossover’s component materials, leading to better signal transfer and superior resolution of fine detail.

No compromise audiophile features Silver plated, high purity oxygen free copper internal wiring is used exclusively throughout the Definition loudspeaker. The OFC copper offers substantial gains in signal transfer and the silver plating affords unsurpassed HF signal transfer in the ‘skin’ region of each conductor. The substantial WBT™ electro-plated brass speaker terminals ensure effective coupling and high current signal transfer from the widest range of external loudspeaker cables.

Tannoy’s unique fifth speaker terminal electrically grounds the driver chassis, dramatically reducing radio frequency interference circulating in most hi-fi audio systems. Eliminating this RF ‘noise’ in Definition reaps considerable benefits in midrange clarity and further opens up the soundstage throughout the presence region for truly expressive music presentation.

Dual Concentric

In the exacting professional world of mixing and mastering, studio engineers demand superior results. The Tannoy Dual Concentric™ co-incident point source technology is renowned worldwide throughout the audio and film industry for its accuracy in the reproduction of sound. For the Definition range, intensive research and development has produced an updated and highly refined version of this famous, and exclusive, Tannoy drive unit.

The time coherent, point source and constant directivity nature of the dispersion characteristics inherent in the Dual make it an accepted industry standard in studio monitoring. By exceeding the rigorous demands of the recording and mastering environment Tannoy can ensure that playback performance in the home is strictly controlled to accurately reflect the sound engineers artistry.

The Dual Concentric in the Definition range provides a superior acoustic performance with enhanced dynamics, power handling and efficiency.

Wideband

Although developed in parallel with the emerging technologies of extended bandwidth SACD and DVDA players, our engineers have long since recognised the improvement that a WideBand Tannoy SuperTweeter can make to a system, even when using bandwidth limited conventional analogue or digital recorded software.

The undisputed benefits of extended high frequency performance have long been recognised by audio enthusiasts and recording professionals worldwide. The key element to understand first of all is that WideBand performance drive units are not there simply to increase the amount of high frequency information you perceive, the acoustic benefit is much more subtle than that. It is the enhancement of the frequencies within the accepted audible band that makes this technology so special.

Wideband driverThe WideBand equipped Dual Concentric driver, present in all Definition models, has a 25-micron titanium dome SuperTweeter that extends frequency response to 35kHz for breathtaking dynamics, detail and sound staging. Not only does this allow supremely accurate fine detail resolution of high frequencies but such wide bandwidth capability also effectively enhances the listening experience throughout the entire frequency range. WideBand technology reduces phase error and significantly improves transient performance below 20kHz. This leads to increased tonal accuracy throughout the whole frequency range, even bass information is faster and tighter, effectively enhancing the total listening experience. Music has an increased immediacy, airiness and impact, providing a performance that sounds more natural and true to life.

'Why bother with frequencies only your dog can hear?'
This question, often asked, takes us to the very heart of what Tannoy WideBand technology is all about. Musical instruments produce considerable energy above 20kHz and, with effects of harmonics and overtones, achieve frequencies well beyond what might generally be considered as the limit of human hearing. For instance, the over 20kHz energy of a trumpet, fitted with a particular type of mute, does not drop into the noise floor until 100kHz. Violin and oboe exhibit energy above 40kHz, while sibilants in speech can also be shown to have energy above 40kHz.

Research has shown, through the measurement of brain wave activity, humans do perceive ultrasonic components within music, concluding that the mechanism of ultrasound transmission is through bone conduction. This is probably via an organ in the inner ear, called the saccule, to the cochlea, the organ responsible for hearing. In addition, WideBand technology reduces phase error and significantly improves transient performance below 20kHz.
