See below for a detailed rundown on the key features of the all new Onkyo TX-NR809:
Network Capability
As one of Onkyo’s new breed of receivers that can link directly to the internet or to your home PC via a local network, the TX-NR809 takes streaming audio and internet radio to a whole new level. MP3, WMA, WMA Lossless, FLAC, WAV, Ogg Vorbis, AAC, and LPCM audio files can now be played back through your main system with unprecedented power and fidelity. The TX-NR609 also brings to life a huge array of internet radio channels from Last.fm* and vTuner, plus on-demand music streaming from Napster*. As well as being compatible with earlier platforms, the receiver is compatible with Microsoft’s Windows® 7 platform, which includes the DLNA 1.5-specified “Play To” media-streaming feature. The TX-NR809’s internet connectivity has the added benefit of making firmware updates simpler than ever.
*Availability of services depends on region.
THX® Select2 Plus™ Certified
THX Select2 Plus certification is specified for rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is 3 to 4 meters and the room volume is around 56 cubic meters. To achieve THX Select2 Plus certification, the TX-NR809 must meet the world’s most demanding standards for home cinema audio quality and performance, and must play at reference volume levels with minimal distortion.
High-Quality Video Processing with HQV® Vida™ VHD1900 Processor
The sophisticated HQV Vida VHD1900 processor is designed to enhance the quality of both standard-definition and high-definition video sources. The chip employs multicadence tracking, expanded 12-bit color processing, and four-field motion-adaptive de-interlacing to optimize video quality and detail. Two new HQV technologies are incorporated into the VHD1900. Auto HQV™ works to automatically enhance the incoming image. And HQV StreamClean™ cleans up compressed video in real time by eliminating mosquito and block noise from lower quality sources such as online video sites.
4k Video Upscaling and Processing with the Marvell Qdeo™ Chip
The TX-NR809 offers full 4K (3840 x 2160) upscaling of standard video sources such as 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i/p. Interlaced-to-progressive conversion and scaling are performed by a high-quality Marvell Qdeo video-processing chip. Qdeo is a versatile video processor that uses algorithms designed to erase video noise and artifacts such as jaggies and feathering. Played back on a compatible widescreen display, your Blu-ray Discs and DVDs will look more detailed and cinematic than ever.
Decoding of High-Definition Surround-Sound Codecs
The TX-NR809 can decode Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™—two lossless formats that enable delivery of a bit-for-bit soundtrack identical to the studio master track. These codecs, previously available only on mid-range and high-end receivers, take advantage of the high data capacity of the Blu-ray format. The TX-NR809 also handles two “lossy” audio formats: Dolby® Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio™. Dolby Digital Plus is designed to accompany high-definition video delivered via disc media, broadcasts, and online content. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, meanwhile, offers a greater bit rate, a higher sampling rate, and more channels than the core DTS technology.
Dolby® Pro Logic® IIz Adds New Dimensions to Surround Sound
As with previous versions of Dolby Pro Logic, this latest version delivers a convincing surround-sound experience from any movie or music source—even a stereo one. On the TX-NR809, Dolby Pro Logic IIz enables you to incorporate two “front high” speakers into your surround-sound set-up as an alternative to the two surround back speakers. The front high channels carry ambient, non-directional audio that helps immerse you even more deeply into your movies and games.
Audyssey DSX™ and Dolby® Pro Logic® IIz Add New Dimensions to Surround Sound
The TX-NR809 handles two new surround-sound technologies from Audyssey and Dolby that offer exciting new ways to set up the speakers in your home cinema system. Audyssey DSX lets you incorporate “front wide” speakers, in place of the usual surround back speakers, to expand the width of the soundstage. Set up at a recommended 60° off center, these channels help to produce a more realistic soundstage and a more immersive listening experience. Alternatively, Audyssey DSX can reconfigure the TX-NR809’s surround back channels to deliver “front height” channels. These channels carry ambient, non-directional audio that adds a new vertical dimension to your movies and games. Dolby Pro Logic IIz provides a similar front-height speaker option that likewise works to create a more enveloping home cinema experience.
Convenient Overlaid On-Screen Display via HDMI
Changing your A/V receiver’s settings is now more seamless than ever, thanks to the TX-NR809’s new overlaid On-Screen Display (OSD) feature. Onscreen set-up menus appear overlaid on the video image you’re watching. This means you can adjust the settings immediately, without having to switch back and forth from a blank screen background.
HDMI™ 1.4 Support for 3D Video and Audio Return Channel
HDMI has fast become the cable of choice for connecting today’s A/V components. The three HDMI 1.4 inputs on the TX-NR809 let you simultaneously connect high-def sources such as a Blu-ray player, a gaming console, and a cable/satellite tuner. A single output then sends a pristine signal to your connected high-resolution display. As the latest version of this connector, HDMI 1.4 adds the exciting possibilities of 3D video and an Audio Return Channel. 3D video is the next big thing in home entertainment, with movie, game, and broadcast content on the increase and 3D-compatible TVs on the near horizon. The future-ready TX-NR809 also offers the convenience of an Audio Return Channel via HDMI. Audio content received directly by your HDTV’s tuner can be sent “upstream” to your A/V receiver, without the need for a separate S/PDIF audio cable.
A Suite of Audyssey Technologies for the Ideal Listening Environment
The TX-NR809 comes with three Audyssey technologies that help create the most suitable listening environment for your home.
(1) Audyssey 2EQ™
Tailors multi-channel audio for your home cinema speaker set-up by measuring three room positions and applying a resolution filter to the satellite speakers to correct for room acoustics.
(2) Audyssey Dynamic Volume™
Automatically compensates for volume fluctuations in different audio content—for example, during commercial breaks—while optimizing the dynamic range.
(3) Audyssey Dynamic EQ™
Maintains a consistent bass response, tonal balance, and surround-sound effect at different volume levels, so you can enjoy the natural dynamics of your content regardless of the volume.
Playback of Different Audio Sources in Two Different Zones
With Powered Zone 2, you can enjoy surround sound entertainment in the main room, while playing back a different stereo source in a second zone equipped with a pair of speakers. Alternatively, you can use the Zone 2 line-out to send an unamplified audio signal to an amplifier (and speakers) in the second room.
Four Game Modes for More Realistic Action
These four gaming modes create an audio experience with more realism and impact. You can select from Rock, Sports, Action, or RPG (Role Playing Game) modes to match your gaming content.
192 kHz/24-Bit Burr-Brown DACs Improve Jitter Performance to Deliver Clearer Sound
High-quality Burr-Brown DACs (PCM1690) work to optimize analog audio performance on the TX-NR809. These DACs perform advanced 24-bit signal processing and support sampling rates of up to 192 kHz, while displaying high resistance to clock jitter and offering a 113 dB dynamic range.
Front-Panel Audio Input for Portable Devices
If you have an iPod or other MP3 player, you can connect it to the TX-NR809’s front panel for quick and convenient audio playback. Your player’s compressed digital music files can then receive a quality boost from the receiver’s Music Optimizer technology.
Music Optimizer™ to Enhance Compressed Digital Music Files
While MP3 or AAC files may sound fine through the headphones of your portable digital player, the limitations of these files can be exposed when played back through a quality home entertainment system. This is because a significant amount of high frequency bit information is lost during the file compression process. To counter this, Onkyo has designed onboard Music Optimizer technology to compensate for lost bit information and improve the quality of compressed audio signals.
